Penjing series is a reflection and a modern interpretation of ancient beliefs of the Chinese scholars primarily during the Ming Dynasty. The Chinese scholars placed an elevated importance on nature’s unique ability to disseminate knowledge through natural objects, and because of this belief, the scholars lived in and alongside the natural world while admiring its aesthetic beauty. The art of Penjing (similar to Bonsai) created microcosmic worlds for reflection and contemplation and was an important aspect of the scholar’s life and beliefs. Taking objects from the environment and displaying them allowed for intellectual stimulation as well as philosophical discussions about humans interaction with the natural world and the importance for observing and preserving it. Here these ancient ideas have been transformed with contemporary materials to introduce modern forms of coexistence with the environment. With my interpretation of this belief, possibilities exist for humans to use technology, modern materials, architecture, art, and environmentally sustainable practices to coexist with the natural world in a symbiotic fashion.
